There are many techniques that can be used to engage an audience such as asking questions, getting them to do something. But a great presentation does not have to have them to be successful.
What is needed is for the presenter's natural style or personality to come through. There is not one standard way of presenting. A great presentation needs the presenters personality to engage the audience.
The engagement comes through the presenter looking at the audience and speaking to them individually as well as a whole. The gestures and movement should be natural and not forced.
However, a great presentation, is also as a result of the presenter improving their presenting (If this sounds contradictory, it is not. It is also natural towish to improve).

Practice Needed For A Great Presentation
A great presentation requires like all good performances practice to reach the heights of greatness.
Practicing a presentation is like rehearsing a play before it is produced. The actors need to get used to the routine, the cues, and even the audience. The needs of the presenter are similar. You should give your presentation several times, once or twice before a friend or two and at least once (if at all possible) in the room where it will be delivered finally. If you can anticipate the circumstances and the surroundings, and practice your presentation under those conditions, you will be better able to meet the actual speech situation.
I've always found practicing hard work but the results are worth it. In my opinion it is not possible to give a great presentation without it.

Knowledge Required For A Great Presentation
A great presentation requires a thorough knowledge of your subject matter. You may have a perfectly pitched voice that is pleasing to the ear of the listener; you may have masters the giving of a presentation and have a very extensive command of English. But even with all these skills yourpresentation may still not be successful if you have not thoroughly mastered the subject of your speech.
It is this lack of thorough subject knowledge that wrecks more presenters' aspirations than any other. Audiences are quick to sense a superficial knowledge of the subject and the speech will not be well-received.
To be a great presentation the presenter must have mastered the subject if they want to master the audience.

The Purpose Of A Great Presentation
It is important in preparing a great presentation that you know why you are presenting. Without a reason to present the presentation will not be focused and will not achieve anything. It will be a waste of time for the presenter and the audience.
Presentations generally have 3 purposes - "to tell", "to sell" or for entertainment.
The "to tell" presentations are made up of informing, updating, explaining or narrative purposes. A "to sell" presentation is either persuasive or inspirational.
The purpose of a "to sell" could be to ask people to donate funds to a charity or to give blood, it is not necessarily about the selling of goods and services.
The purpose of a great presentation determines the language to be used and the supporting information used. It also gives a measure to understand the effectiveness of the presentation.

Great Presentation - The Audience Plays It Part
The ultimate test of a great presentation is what the audience thought of it. One audience may think it is a great presentation but another audience may think it is average or worse. Different audiences need the presentation to be modified for them.
An audience that knows a lot about the topic being presented needs a different presentation to the one given to an audience that has little or no experience in it.
When developing a great presentation it is important to consider the audience. Find out as much as you can about their knowledge, their attitude to topic, their expectations, the occasion or purpose of the meeting, their age etc. This easier to find out when the presentation is to given within an organization than one given externally.
To summarize - know your audience to give a great presentation.
